The Gate
Dante and Virgil were now approaching the city called Dis.
Dante pointed out that the towers of the city looked red. Virgil mentioned that
it was the fire burning that made them red, since they are in a deeper hell.
The walls of the city were made of great iron. The ferryman eventually said
that they had reached their stop. The angels that had fallen looked upon them
and shouted out saying who are these people that haven’t tasted death and are
walking through the realm of the dead. The master beckoned the angels to come
and speak with him. They eventually said to let them pass. Dante thanked Virgil
for rescuing him for the seventh time. Dante walked into the city and the gates
closed on Virgil. He looked daring at those around and asked who denied him
entrance. He then turned and told Dante not to worry for he would pass any test
they gave him. Virgil said that they must continue on and that he had been here
once before and that the last time was on behalf of a sorceress. His skin was
stripped from him last time as he was forced to enter into the wall to bring
out the spirit.
