Feedback Strategies for Success

I read The Difference Between Praise and Feedback and How to Give Bad Feedback WithoutBeing a Jerk. I read these after I got some pointers from the Feedback Gallery. I have to say I never thought about these things when I would give people feedback. When I was looking at the Feedback Gallery, I learned a lot about how to point things out that do not make sense. Usually I would just leave it at that is awful or great when I looked at someone’s creation or work. I think being able to point out the whys to my comments to be quite helpful. I might not be right but at least they will understand where I am coming from when I give that opinion. When I read the article The Difference Between Praise and Feedback I kind of learned that just pointing out the good things someone does hinders their growth. I have always believed that growth comes through challenges and adversity. They mainly spoke unto parents raising children where this topic is most influential, but I also feel it is relative to those older that are looking to help others grow. Lay back on the praise, looking for the holes which you could poke into their work or areas at which the person could improve. The article How to Give Bad Feedback Without Being a Jerk I found to be really helpful towards myself. I have a problem with being blunt sometimes and I think being able to tell someone that improvement needs to be made while not entirely ruining that person’s morale to be vital. I learned that first you must establish if this person wants honest feedback. If they do, then you are able to give them your opinion from your perspective explaining yourself the best you can to let them know why you feel the way you do. You must get off your high horse and talk to them as someone you want to see succeed. Feedback is vital for growth, that is why I feel it is important that one is always looking for it. One must take the good with the bad feedback and see where they can improve.

Topic Research Week Three

The three different story book ideas that I have come up with and will be considering are Changelings, Tricksters and or Werewolves.

Changelings- I am still stuck on the idea of taking the traditional changeling stories and putting a twist on them. I believe I have narrowed my stories down even more two three separate stories that I will do. One will include a story where the changeling gets switched out with a dead child to grow to love the family and be with them. Another story will be about a changeling that gets switched out with an evil kings’ child and is changes the fate of the kingdom for the better. The last version is one is a traditional telling of a changeling story where the child is stolen from the parents with a replacement put in its place that isn’t human! Tricksters- For tricksters I am still running along the lines of three separate stories building up to a story that combines the three tricksters. The first three would be about Loki, Coyote, and Anansi. The build up would be in the third story where the three compete for top trickster.

Werewolves- I believe that I would like to stick with two of the first three options and I came up with another one. I would do three stories about werewolves but with a twist. The first story would open with a man who sold his soul for a ring that would change him into someone strong enough to save his family from men who had taken them. This ring would change said man into a beast whenever he put it on, but there will be a cost. The second is a retelling of beauty and the beast where beast is a werewolf. The third one is about a boy who gets changed into a werewolf through an animal spirit taking over his body when he went for a run. The spirit only comes out in great danger to protect him. Week Three Story

Tunnel to Ramerstein  

  There once was an empire known as Krazik. The people there were a mild-mannered bunch that had grown together into one large empire. The empire was ruled by a king that was well liked by all and thought to be the greatest they had had so far. He cared for his people and wanted them to reach inner peace and happiness, living eternally with their god known as Ramerstein. They worshiped this god for all time and had grown to be truly blessed from this. He had showered those who worshiped him with prosperity and love. This had not always been so though. There had been times throughout their history that the Krazik people had fallen away and lost their faith. They acted contrary then what they were taught by the great Ramerstein, and because of this they would experience great heartache and suffering. The king had conceded that he would guide his people by the teachings of Ramerstein and that through their obedience they would forever be blessed.

    One night the king awoke sweating and anxious. He had a dream that the people would fall away, and they would all be slaughtered. He thought to himself ways that he might bring his people to Ramerstein and be saved from this fate. He decided the only way to do this was to build a tunnel down to the palace of Ramerstein and personally beseech the great god to have mercy on his people. Over the next couple months, the king would instruct his people on the building of this tunnel. He would have them work nonstop for months on end. Many lives were lost, and the mild-mannered empire was growing angrier with the king. They felt he was wronging them by forcing them to work. The people started to fight and bicker with each other. They would even go to such lengths to hurt their fellow citizens so as to not be stuck in a tunnel with them. The hate and animosity only grew as time continued.

    After a year and much bloodshed Ramerstein intervened. He called a mighty earthquake that shook the earth separating the land into many different parts. The once great empire was sucked into the earth into various layers of the earth each with their own way of communicating. Some with voice, some with hands and some with only sensing. The people had no way of communicating with those above or below them in the earth. They were all separated to live the rest of their lives in darkness until Ramerstein saw fit to change that. The people bellowed and groaned in sadness knowing that their evil hearts led them to this.  

Authors Notes: This story has many differences than the Tower of Babel story most are used to. First off, the god in both stories is different. Also, the reason for building the tunnel was different than the reason for the building of the Tower of Babel. The tunnel was built due to a king’s fear of losing his people, where as the tower was built to reach heaven. One is for the love of ones own the other is due to hubris. I also changed the consequences. The consequences of the tower of babel is that the people were separated not being able to understand one another due to language differences. In my story however they were also separated but underground instead of on it. I also changed that instead of speaking different languages they communicated differently on each layer.
