Introduction: A Bit About Me

    About Me
Hello all! This is my last year at OU and I am glad to be finishing up with this class! My major is Russian Language and Literature from The University of Oklahoma. I would have to say the coolest thing about this major is that I got to meet so many interesting people and learned a lot about other cultures. Before getting into the program I did not know much about the world but after taking so many courses and studying abroad I got to see people from all walks of life! I also learned another language, which while challenging has really rewarding! From learning Russian I sought to meet others that were able to speak it or learning to speak it and just by happenstance met my fiancé! Who knew Russian would do so much for me?

I love to read and many of the books I read or either science fiction or fantasy. Something about other worldly possibilities filling my head with dreams seems to sate a childlike curiosity in me. Because of such a curiosity I am taking this class! I have taken other courses like this before such as a Mythology course at my last college but I wanted to see what knew things that could be offered by this course! I would say that I have a few favorite book series such as Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan, Dresden Files by Jim butcher, and The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind! I have reread each of these series multiple times, and each time feels like the first!
Lastly I guess I would like to talk a little about where I see my future headed. I plan on going to nursing school in the spring to become a RN. After which I will move somewhere up north where the weather isn’t so hot and settle down. I have always known I wanted to go into the medical field just never really knew where I fit in. After doing a bit of research and talking to others I decided that nursing was the best of all possibilities. They get the most patient exposure and get to give the most hands on care, which is what I want.

  1. Hi Dallas,

I think it's really cool that you're majoring in Russian Language and Literature. You may have read some of the stories from the week we will have the Russian reading options. I also think it's great you've been able to study abroad and see the world in a different view! I admire you for being so well rounded with your background with Russian literature and now pursuing a career in nursing.

  2. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage and graduation! And good luck in nursing school. Nursing can be a very rewarding profession. What type of nursing are you considering? My friend is an ER nurse, and my mother was in long-term care. They are vastly different jobs. Wherever on the spectrum you end up, I wish you well.

Will you move to a state with a larger Russian population so that your mastery of the second language will serve you?

  3. Hi Dallas! That is so cool that you met your fiancé through learning a new language. Since your major is Russian Language and Literature, have you read any Russian myths in Russian for other classes or fun? I think translations are a fun thing to explore sometimes. It might be an interesting exercise to read a myth in Russian and then find a translation to see how well the meaning was captured in English. I'm excited to read more of your blog posts as the semester continues!

  4. Hi Dallas,
I've never met a Russian Language and Literature major. My grandma was an RN for 30 years and she absolutely loved it and I am sure you will too! Do you intend on moving to somewhere like NY with a larger Russian population? I am an avid reader but have never read any of those series. I will have to check them out!

  5. Hey there Dallas! Congrats on your engagement and getting to senior year. As a senior myself, I know it has seemed like such a long road, but I'm sure we will both find it very rewarding in the end. I have never met anyone who is a Russian language major, but then again most people haven't even heard even heard of my major (religious studies). I am interested in the medical field myself and I am headed off to medical school next fall. Im glad you found your own interest in the medical field as well and wish you all the best!

  6. Hi Dallas!

First of all, congrats on your engagement! It's so cool how your path of study led you to so many cool aspects of your life. I had no idea we had a Russian Language and Literature major here so that's interesting to know! I bet you could have a lot of fun with Russian myths for this class if you wanted to. Best of luck this year and when you go to nursing school!

  7. Hey Dallas! Fellow senior here, I can't believe the journey is almost over! I don't think I have met a Russian Language and Literature major here, and I'm really curious as to how you found your passion in that field, especially since you're planning on medical school after college. Definitely a very unique combination! I'm looking forward to reading more of your stories this semester.

  8. Hi Dallas,

What made you choose Russian? Was there something about it in particular, or did you just know you wanted to do a deep-dive into another language and culture? (Congratulations, by the way, on your engagement!)

Boy do I agree with you about the heat, but much more importantly it’s so great that you’re going to become a nurse! Nurses are so, so important: they in so many ways define the quality of people’s experiences in their times of greatest need, and there’s a perpetual shortage of people who are willing to take on that important work. All the best in your endeavors!

    Cheers,
    A.M.

  9. Hi Dallas!

First off, love your name. That’s where I’m from and I’ve always thought that was such a cool name for someone (I’ve met a couple people named Dallas in my lifetime). This is my last semester at OU as well! It sounds like you’re super well-rounded (being that your major is Russian Language and Literature, but that you’re hoping to be a nurse after college) and I wish you the best of luck with both! I feel the same about hot weather, I don’t know exactly what my plans are after college yet but I would not be opposed to moving somewhere with cooler weather. Anyways, I’m looking forward to reading your stories this semester!

  10. Hello Dallas! it is so cool hearing about how your learning of this new language has done so much for you including allowing you to meet your fiancé. I have a few friends in nursing school and I will say that I have never heard of a nurse who studied Russian for their undergrad degree. Its unique but it sounds loke what you love to do, Good luck to you!

  12. Hey Dallas! I think it's so cool that you're majoring in Russian. It's great that you found something you love, and even got to study abroad and learn more! It's one thing to learn the language here in America, but it's so amazing to get to go to a country where the people actually speak Russian daily and learn it alongside them, so I bet that was an awesome experience. I think it's really cool, too, that you plan to go into nursing afterwards. That's such a rewarding job, so I hope you have a great time with it! Good luck with the class!

  13. Nice to meet you, Dallas! Congratulations on making it to your senior year, that is so exciting! Your major is super interesting and one that I do not hear of often, so I am glad that you enjoy it and that it has brought you so many opportunities. I am sure that it will come in handy once you get to nursing school as well. I do not blame you at all for wanting to move up north and get away from the warmth, it is so nice to be able to enjoy cool, refreshing air for once. I hope you have a great semester and I look forward to reading more of your stories!

  14. Hey Dallas!
Is it strange that I feel a bond with you because I'm from Dallas? This is my last year at OU too and I am glad to be finishing up too. Russian is so cool, I wish my mind worked like that but I have always really struggled with foreign languages. That is also great that you met your fiance through pursuing that passion of yours. I hope you have a great semester and I am excited to read more of your stories.

  15. Hello! I am amazed at your major. Russian literature just sounds like a very hard subject to study, in my opinion. So, in that case, congrats on sticking with it and pursing something that you love! Being an RN would be so much fun, especially after you move somewhere you want to be rather than be stuck in Oklahoma!! Nice to meet you!

  16. Hi Dallas! I have to agree with others before me. What a cool name you have! I cannot imagine learning to speak Russian, but it is amazing that you learned it and have gained so much from it such as meeting your fiance! Congrats on that as well! Nurses are an integral part of the medical field and I am sure you will be an amazing one. Good luck this semester!

  17. Hey Dallas!

I have a great friend who is also majoring in Russian! I think it's awesome that you've had the opportunity to dive into learning another language. Have you had the opportunity to travel to Russia to experience the language firsthand? I too love science fiction and fantasy books. I highly recommend Neil Gaiman's work if you're looking for something new to get into!

  19. Hey Dallas! Thank you so much for sharing. It is awesome that you were able to study abroad. Looking back, that would be something that I wish I would have done in my undergrad. It seems like everyone that has the opportunity loves it and learns so much about other cultures. Where did you go? Also, best of luck with nursing school! What a great field to go into!

  20. Wow Dallas! Your major is very unique and it is amazing that you know another language, especially Russian! I took Spanish for so long and still do not really know how to speak it... yikes haha! I am super jealous that you have traveled a lot. I want to travel sooo bad. Do you have a favorite trip? What countries or continents have you been to?

  22. Hi Dallas!
Wow, how cool that the language of Russian provided you the love of your life! That is crazy and so amazing. I love that you chose a unique and special major because it shows your passion. I actually hadn’t known about that major before so I think it is really awesome! This is also my last year, and I cannot believe it!

  24. Howdy,

You have chosen a really interesting major; how did you decide upon it in the first place? I think it is super cool that you met your fiancé because of Russian. I feel like nursing is quite the change from Russian, but I guess your undergraduate does not really need to be related to what you study after graduating. I wish you luck in your future endeavors and am glad that you have had such a great time so far.

  25. Hello Dallas! I too love reading sci fi and fantasy books; they are the best escape from the real world. It's too bad that I haven't had much time to read for pleasure these days. I definitely want to get back into it. I'm interested in going into the medical field as well so I hope nursing school goes great for you!

  26. Hello Dallas! Congrats on making to your final year. That is such a great achievement! Your major is such a unique and cool major. I have always thought about learning a lesser known european language but really haven't got the chance. I hope that your last semester is going well and hope that it leads to great success in the future.

  27. Hey Dallas, wow that is really awesome that you are majoring in Russian Language and Literature. Also, congrats on meeting your fiancé, that is a huge deal! Where are your favorite places you have traveled abroad? I love to hear people tell all about their experiences abroad. I have thought about nursing school too, but I have not found what will be the best fit for me just yet. Good luck in life and nursing school!
